UKE NiTE 12

Why did we create the UKE NiTE 12?

As part of the Corktown Ukulele Jam we have access to a large collection of tunes in the Corktown Jambook. The shear number can be a little daunting. The UKE NiTE 12 collection is an attempt to pull out a few of the songs and provide some focus. This allows us to practice these songs more often as a group and also provides a base for people to work on at home. Knowing there's a better chance one of these songs will show up on any given night there is less chance that your practice will have been in vain. Ultimately we would like to be able to play any of the 12 songs at the drop of a hat without benefit of books or projection.

How does Tony print them in the cool booklet format?

Your milage may vary but here's how I do it.
  1. Open the file with Adobe Acrobat reader.
  2. Select print
  3. In the Print dialog under Scaling select Booklet Printing
  4. Print
On my setup with an inkjet printer one side of each sheet is printed and then I am prompted to reinsert the pages and the other sided is printed. Fold the resulting pages in half and you have a booklet. To staple the booklet I go to the copy centre in my local Staples store and borrow their long stapler that can reach the 5.5 inches to the fold.

Midi files

UKE NiTE regular Dennis Wilson collected midi versions of The 12 and transposed them into the keys we play them in. If you are unfamiliar with any of the tunes these will help you get started. You will likely find tempo and phrasing differences when you hear them at our jams but these files can help you get familiar with the chord sequences and the tune.

Thank you Dennis.

Dennis says:

You note that there are tempo and phrasing differences.

You might want to point readers to skytopia

The site allows you to manipulate the midi files.
You can adjust the tempo,
You can change the instruments
You can change the key
But, alas, you can't change the phrasing.

I changed the key to our songsheets, but left the instrumentation and tempo to the original authors.

For practice purposes, readers might want to upload the midi file to skytopia, and slow it down (or speed it up!)

Other sources

You can find most of these songs on youtube as well. Probably in a multitude of keys.

For 8.5x11 full size printing use this file

For booklet printing use this file
(The aspect ratio between a booklet page and an 8.5x11 page is different. To get the most from booklet printing the page size was changed to 'legal'. This allowed us to slightly increase the font size but does not format well if you do not print using the Booklet option.)
